"They don't have any humanity. They are not humans."

Another day in China, another forced abortion of the most horrifying nature. Thanks to global news, the woman and her husband were somehow able to get their story out to the wider world. The words I have quoted are from the mother. Just as significant are the words of a nurse in the hospital which committed the crime. When asked about it by a Sky News reporter, she replied: "I don't know the specific reason for this case and it's not my place to care."

China now has a major demographic problem, thanks to its one-child policy resulting not only in forced abortions but also infanticide by parents wanting a boy instead of a girl. This in turn has led to a troubling imbalance in the male:female ratio among young adult Chinese, which in turn leads to further dysfunctional and immoral behaviour.

Some Chinese seem to venerate their political leaders as if they were benign parents. This delusion is of course just another manifestation of deeply embedded authoritarianism. One can only hope that today's more connected China - internally and externally - will continue to chip away at the evils of its authoritarian structure. As the grieving mother said, "They don't have any humanity. They are not humans."

  1. seeing the No Comment reminded me of Edmund Burke's quote "All it takes for evil to succeed is for a few good men to do nothing..."
