Strangled by superstition

Whoever's writing the script for the drama into which I have stumbled is getting a bit drunk on non-stop thrills. The latest is P now telling me that Maria, the nanny, was woken up at 3am last night by the ghost of our landlady's allegedly murdered husband, who was trying to throttle her (Maria). The nanny hates football but loves religion.

Since P also has a tendency to superstition, like most Brazilians, she was quick to see this as confirmation of her own previous encounter with said unhappy spirit. This was apparently one night when we heard a noise in the adjacent bedroom (now Maria's room). I don't recall the incident as dramatically but probably more as just another example of random noises that all buildings, and especially really crappy semi-derelict ones like this make.

First of all we don't know for certain if this man died here and certainly not if he was murdered. The latter claim was made to me by a woman whom I met in a local cafe and who lives round the corner. After making her distaste for our neighbour and landlady clear, she then told me that the landlady's husband had been killed during a break-in. Malicious gossip ?

Second, regarding the nanny's unpleasant nocturnal moment: she has just been the victim of a violent break-in, including being tied up and gagged so I would assume that might have something to do with any panic attack that could have occurred.

Finally, the nanny was told previously by P about the possible spooky visitor, so this was by no means what marketers might call an "unprompted" haunting.

As I said, the scriptwriter seems to be snorting too much coke or something. Can we take it down a notch or two and get back to the usual mundanities ? Or is this what happens when you live without TV and have to make your own entertainment ?
